To be able to get some kids to work well with you, sometimes you really have to connect with them on a personal level. You have to be able to understand what they are going through. I have worked with some kids who have struggled with a certain skill, for example reading. Being able to tell them that I have been there once and also struggled with reading may make them realize it’s not just them. Being able to also find common interests like sports, food, or favorite animals can make them want to have conversations with you and allow them to get to know you better which will make them comfortable. Always being there for the kids is important to gain their trust as well. If a student is being difficult and won’t necessarily do what they are supposed to do, you might have to meet them “halfway” meaning you might have to give them a reason to do it like a prize or tell them they can’t do something else unless they do the other thing first, just depending on the situation. For instance, a kid won’t finish their book, then they can not go to recess until they finish or a student won’t finish their math problems, but you tell them if they finish them and do them well, they may get extra play time. Knowing how to teach kids in a way that will benefit them is important. Not all people learn the same way, some like to be hands on, while others just like to take notes.
